Care Amiche e cari Amici,
quest’estate è stata ricca di emozioni e di progetti: in un mese fitto di incontri, insieme ad Ivana, ho già incontrato 41 Rotary Club del nostro Distretto.
In queste importanti occasioni di confronto ho rivisto con gioia, e adesso tutti in piena attività, i presidenti con i quali circa un anno fa ho avviato il percorso di formazione. Ho ascoltato le testimonianze di impegno dei direttivi e scambiato una grande quantità di fertili idee con i soci.
Ho gioito per le numerose iniziative che i club hanno avviato con successo e per quelle che sono in cantiere, pronte a prendere l’avvio sotto la spinta dell’entusiasmo dei proponenti.
In alcuni casi ho anche partecipato a progetti in corso di svolgimento, traendone una sensazione di profondo benessere, come è accaduto con l’Handicamp 2024, la bella iniziativa di inclusione promossa dal Rotary club di Castelvetrano con i relativi Rotaract e Interact – giunta quest’anno alla sua XLIII edizione che coinvolge gruppi di giovani diversamente abili in un soggiorno intenso, pieno di emozioni, nel quale i soci condividono con gioia spazi e attività.
In ogni territorio, in ogni club, ho trovato un tessuto fertile e generoso, una ricchezza frizzante di iniziative e ho riscontrato una piena connessione con le comunità e con le istituzioni locali.
Ho incontrato rappresentanti religiosi e istituzionali delle varie comunità, tra i quali vescovi e sindaci, e tutti, con mio gran de orgoglio, hanno sottolineato con forza quanto importante sia per le loro comunità locali la presenza dei Rotary club, patrocinatori e trascinatori di iniziative positive ed utili, agenti di coesione sociale e motori propulsivi di crescita economica.
In ognuno dei 41 club visitati ho verificato una numerosa e crescente presenza di donne e di giovani, attivi e pieni di entusiasmo, ottima promessa per dei Rotary Club sempre più forti, efficienti ed attrattivi.
In questi primi due mesi dall’inizio dell’anno sociale sono entrati a far parte della famiglia rotariana del nostro Distretto già 72 nuovi soci nei Rotary Club e durante le visite ho avuto il piacere di suggellare molti di questi ingressi con l’apposizione di distintivi a giovani brillanti e motivati, a professioniste e professionisti stimati, e ho anche coronato il mio grande sogno di far rientrare qualcuno tra coloro che, per motivi contingenti, si erano allontanati dal Rotary, con il progetto per l’incremento dell’effettivo che ho intitolato “Rotary back home”.
Il mese di agosto ci ha purtroppo anche riservato un grande dolore: il nostro amato Past Governor Gaetano De Bernardis ci ha improvvisamente e inaspettatamente lasciati.
Gaetano, splendido e irresistibile Presidente dell’anno in corso, ideatore di innumerevoli iniziative che hanno fatto la differenza nelle nostre comunità in ambiti che spaziano dalla tutela dell’ambiente, alla leadership giovanile, alla cultura.
Lascia un grande vuoto in tutti noi, ma anche un patrimonio di ideali e di servizio a cui ispirarsi.
Quest’anno coordinava anche il progetto SOS Api 2.0, da lui stesso ideato nell’anno di governatorato, e che sta riscuotendo un successo straordinario. Chapeau carissimo Gaetano!
Settembre è il mese che il Rotary International dedica all’alfabetizzazione e all’istruzione di base, ancora oggi una priorità per il traguardo della equità nel mondo. Da sempre grandi sono i progetti e le iniziative del Rotary, attraverso i club, nelle aree più depresse del pianeta, ma tanto c’è ancora da fare e la nostra attenzione deve rimane-re alta, a partire dalle comunità più vicine a noi. Soltanto così potremo avere la speranza di costruire un mondo nel quale si vivranno meno disparità, meno guerre e ci sarà più pace.
Il tema della Pace è infatti quello centrale del nostro impegno ed è il tema che ad Ivana e a me sta particolarmente a cuore: ricordo a tal proposito la data del 21 settembre, giornata internazionale per la Pace, per la quale chiedo ai club di porre una particolare attenzione.
Intanto cresce il progetto di Ivana per l’adozione di una Scuola per la pace in Terrasanta: i club visitati stanno dimostrando una convinta e corale partecipazione per la quale Ivana ed io vi siamo molto grati; ci ha emozionato particolarmente la donazione giunta da club Interact.
Mentre vi scrivo mi trovo all’Institute di Bonn, tra gli altri insieme ai DGE e ai DGN europei (a partire da Sergio e Lina), che hanno effettuato la loro formazione da prossimi Governatori.
Dal 30 agosto al 1° settembre, Bonn è anche sede del “Rotary European Summit”, un appuntamento che serve a rinsaldare i legami di amicizia internazionale tra i 65 Distretti del Rotary europei, favorendo l’attivazione di progetti di portata internazionale e consentendo di approfondire i temi più importanti della nostra azione rotariana.
A tal riguardo, ho assistito alla sessione condotta dal nostro John de Giorgio su “Empowering Young Leaders”, assai apprezzata dai numerosi partecipanti.
A Bonn continua l’attenzione dedicata al tema della Pace, intorno alla quale ruotano poi gli altri temi di grande attualità, quali il Futuro sostenibile, i Giovani, la Leadership e il Cambiamento, oltre che – lo ricordo sempre – il nostro impegno forte per la Rotary Foundation .
Continuiamo tutti insieme a cooperare per raggiungere questi grandi obiettivi con slancio e generosità!

Dear Friends,
this summer has been full of emotions and projects: in a month full of meetings, together with Ivana, I have already met 41 Rotary Clubs in our District.
On these important occasions of discussion, I saw with joy, and now all fully active, the presidents with whom I started the training course about a year ago. I listened to the testimonies of commitment from the directors and exchanged a large amount of fertile ideas with the members.
I rejoiced at the numerous initiatives that the clubs have successfully launched and for those that are in the pipeline, ready to start under the pressure of the enthusiasm of the proponents. In some cases I have also participated in ongoing projects, drawing a feeling of profound well-being, as happened with Handicamp 2024, the beautiful inclusion initiative promoted by the Rotary club of Castelvetrano – with the related Rotaract and Interact – which arrived this This year is in its 43rd edition which involves groups of young people with disabilities in an intense stay, full of emotions, in which members joyfully share spaces and activities.
In every territory, in every club, I found a fertile and generous fabric, a sparkling wealth of initiatives and I found a full connection with the communities and local institutions.
I met religious and institutional representatives of the various communities, including bishops and mayors, and everyone, to my great pride, strongly underlined how important the presence of Rotary clubs is for their local communities, sponsors and drivers of positive and profits, agents of social cohesion and driving forces of economic growth.
In each of the 41 clubs visited I verified a large and growing presence of women and young people, active and full of enthusiasm, an excellent promise for increasingly stronger, efficient and attractive Rotary Clubs.
In these first two months since the beginning of the financial year, 72 new members have already joined the clubs of our District and during the visits I had the pleasure of sealing many of these entries with the affixing of badges to brilliant and motivated young people, to esteemed professionals, and I also fulfilled my great dream of bringing back someone among those who, for contingent reasons, had distanced themselves from Rotary, with the project to increase the membership which I entitled “Rotary back home”.
The month of August unfortunately also brought us great sorrow: our beloved Past Governor Gaetano De Bernardis suddenly and unexpectedly left us.
Gaetano, splendid and irresistible President of the current year, creator of countless initiatives that have made a difference in our communities in areas ranging from environmental protection, to youth leadership, to culture.
He leaves a great void in all of us, but also a heritage of ideals and service to inspire us.
This year he also coordinated the SOS Api 2.0 project, which he himself created in the year of governorship, and which is enjoying extraordinary success. Chapeau dearest Gaetano!
September is the month that Rotary International dedicates to literacy and basic education, still today a priority for the goal of equity in the world. Rotary’s projects and initiatives have always been great, through the clubs, in the most depressed areas of the planet, but there is still a lot to do, and our attention must remain high, starting from the communities closest to us. Only in this way can we have the hope of building a world in which there will be less disparity, fewer wars and there will be more peace.
The theme of Peace is in fact the central one of our commitments and it is the theme that is particularly close to the heart of Ivana and I: in this regard I remember the date of 21 September, the international day for Peace, for which I ask the clubs to place a particular attention.
Meanwhile, Ivana’s project for the adoption of a School for Peace in the Holy Land is growing: the clubs visited are demonstrating a convinced and unanimous participation for which Ivana and I are very grateful; We were particularly moved by the donation from Club Interact.
As I write to you, I am at the Institute in Bonn, among others together with the European DGEs and DGNs (starting with Sergio and Lina), who have carried out their training as the next Governors. From 30 August to 1 September, Bonn is also home to the “Rotary European Summit”, an event that serves to strengthen the bonds of international friendship between the 65 European Rotary Districts, encouraging the activation of projects of international scope and allowing delve deeper into the most important themes of our Rotarian action.
In this regard, I attended the session conducted by our John de Giorgio on “Empowering Young Leaders”, much appreciated by the numerous participants.
In Bonn, the attention dedicated to the theme of Peace continues, around which other highly topical themes revolve, such as the sustainable future, young people, leadership and change, as well as – I always remember – our strong commitment to the Rotary Foundation.
Let us all continue to cooperate together to achieve these great goals with enthusiasm and generosity!
