Il Rotary è uno stile di vita.
Uno stile di vita buono, naturale, completo e pieno di amicizia.
Il mondo è pieno di potenziali rotariani, ce ne sono molti che mi stanno ascoltando.

Care amiche ed amici,
quest’anno il Presidente Internazionale Shekhar Mehta nel presentare all’Assemblea Internazionale, rigorosamente su Zoom, il motto dell’anno Serve to change lives, che darà un indirizzo a tutte le nostre attività di service, ha indicato una strada da percorrere per raggiungere gli obiettivi dell’anno: “crescere di più, servire di più”. In sostanza l’obiettivo categorico del Rotary International deve essere, a suo parere, quello di superare la soglia di 1.200.000 iscritti che da qualche anno non riusciamo a lascarci alle spalle e quello di crescere anche nelle attività di servizio sia nei nostri territori sia in quelli che hanno più bisogno.
La crescita è un obiettivo che costantemente viene preso in considerazione e attentamente monitorato. Essa, infatti, coinvolge tutti i club determinando le sorti dell’effettivo. Noi, rotariani del Distretto 2110 Sicilia e Malta, proveniamo da anni nei quali l’effettivo si è assottigliato, perdendo per strada centinaia di iscritti.
Le cause possono essere molteplici e coinvolgono la capacità di attrazione dei club e la loro visibilità nei territori di rifermento, un limitato coinvolgimento delle new entry nella vita dei club, la non sempre efficace attività di servizio svolta dai singoli club, il
non sempre adeguato livello di affiatamento fra i soci, l’entità delle quote annuali, la crisi che dal 2008 ha messo in difficoltà la nostra economia e quella siciliana in particolare, e tanti altri motivi che si potrebbero citare.
Per fortuna, negli ultimi due anni, con i governatori Cimino e Di Costa il trend negativo sembra essersi fermato per dare spazio a un timido, ma significativo processo di
crescita che offre un segnale preciso di inversione di tendenza. E ho notato con una certa soddisfazione che nel corso delle mie prime visite ai club il trend sembra continuare con la modalità che a me piace di più: con l’ammissione di nuovi soci nei club. Sì, perché negli ultimi anni si è preferito orientare la crescita più sul versante della fondazione di nuovi club che su quello della tenuta dell’effettivo all’interno dei club già esistenti. La conseguenza è stata che l’incremento di nuovi soci nei nuovi club è stato compensato negativamente dalla perdita di soci all’interno dei club “storici”. Inoltre, a volte, per fortuna non sempre, la nascita di nuovi club è stata la risultante di tensioni all’interno di alcuni club già esistenti. La conseguenza di tutto ciò è che, se da un lato è cresciuto il numero dei club nel Distretto, dall’altro sono nati club nei quali parzialmente sono confluiti soci di altri club e sono andati in crisi di sopravvivenza alcuni club che oggi mostrano un effettivo davvero esiguo (14/15 soci). Siccome è a tutti chiaro che un club con una situazione numerica di tal genere rischia l’estinzione, è opportuno che nel corso dell’anno i presidenti, i direttivi e i soci di questi club si attivino per “mettere in sicurezza” la “vita” di questi sodalizi che rischiano di scomparire lasciando senza Rotary alcune zone del nostro territorio (il mio pensiero va in particolare al club di Marsala Lilibeo-Isole Egadi scomparso lo scorso anno e al club di Gozo, in particolare, che vive una situazione di crisi). Naturalmente effettivo e progettualità di servizio sono due elementi, come ha ben sostenuto il Presidente Mehta, che si tengono reciprocamente: se un club è sottodimensionato nel numero dei soci, difficilmente riesce a fare progetti di service che abbiano un forte e importante impatto sul territorio e viceversa, se un club non riesce a mettere in campo una convincente attività di servizio, difficilmente vedrà crescere il suo organico. Occorre pertanto ripensare tutta la nostra politica di crescita, evitando scorciatoie che a volte si rivelano controproducenti.
Tuttavia, se in un’area del nostro Distretto, dove non sia presente il Rotary, si creeranno le condizioni per la nascita di un nuovo club che non derivi da fratture all’interno di altri club, in tal caso la creazione di un nuovo club sarà gradita e soprattutto efficace ai
fini di una crescita sana. Peraltro, un ruolo importante ai fini dell’incremento dell’effettivo da quest’anno lo può esercitare ancor di più il Rotaract. Questi, infatti, da semplice programma del Rotary, quest’anno, a seguito della risoluzione del Consiglio di Legislazione del 2019, ha mutato il suo tipo di affiliazione. Dopo questa storica decisione lo scorso aprile, il Presidente del R.I., Mark Maloney, ha nominato la Task Force Elevate Rotaract, composta da Rotaractiani e Rotariani, per raccomandare aggiornamenti alla normativa, per riflettere meglio il nuovo status del Rotaract. Questi, infatti, è diventato vero e proprio partner del Rotary ed è entrato a far parte della grande famiglia rotariana. Tutto ciò naturalmente determina un peso maggiore del Rotaract nelle attività complessive del nostro movimento, ma anche nuovi oneri in quanto tutte le attività del Rotaract risultano più vincolate a quelle del Rotary e del Distretto di riferimento. Devo sottolineare che in tal senso i primi segnali di questo nuovo status acquisito dal Rotaract nel nostro Distretto sono molto confortanti, Il clima complessivo è ottimo, il Rotaract ha mostrato piena condivisione rispetto ai progetti distrettuali di grande impatto e quindi la nuova situazione, determinata dall’Elevate Rotaract sicuramente produrrà una crescita di tutto il movimento rotariano.
In definitiva, ritengo che bisogna guardare al futuro con cauto ottimismo sul versante della membership. Abbiamo superato senza grandi perdite la buia notte della pandemia e abbiamo evitato un tracollo numerico che sarebbe stato devastante per tutta l’organizzazione. Ora è tempo di ripartenza: il Rotary riparte con rinnovato entusiasmo di “voler fare”, perché alla fine, ricordiamolo tutti, saremo giudicati non per quello che avremo detto, ma per quello che avremo fatto.

Dear Friends,
this year, the International President, Shekhar Mehta, presenting at the International Assembly, on Zoom, the motto of the year Serve to change lives, that will address all our service activities, showed us the way to reach the goals of the year “more growth, more service”.
The categoric goal of Rotary International must be, according to him, to exceed the subscribers’ threshold of 1.200.000.
In fact, from some years, we are not able to exceed it and to growth in service activities, either in our territories or in those where there is more need.
The growth is a goal that is constantly taken into consideration and monitored carefully.
It involves all the clubs, determining the fates of membership.
We, Rotarians of the District 2110 Sicily and Malta, come from years during which the membership number has dwindled, losing hundreds of subscribers along the way.
The causes can be multiple and involve the capacity of attraction of clubs and their visibility in the territories of reference, a limited involvement of new entries in the clubs, the not always effective action of service done by single clubs, the not always partnership, the amount of annual fee, the crisis of 2008 that put in difficulties our economy and in particular the one of Sicily, and other many reasons that could be cited.
Luckily, in the last two years, with Governors Cimino and Di Costa, the negative trend seems to have stopped to give way to a timid but significant growth process that offers a precise signal of a turnaround.
I have noticed with a certain satisfaction that during my first visits to clubs, the trend seems to continue with the modality I like best: with the admission of new members in clubs.
In the last years, it was preferred to orientate the growth more on the side of starting new clubs than on the side of the maintenance of membership inside clubs already existing.
The consequence was that the increasing of new members in new clubs brought the decrease of members inside the historic clubs: besides, sometimes, not always, the birth of new clubs caused tensions inside some clubs already existing.
The consequence of all this is, if from one side has increased the numbers of clubs in the District, from the other side new clubs were born where members of other clubs partially passed, and other clubs have gone into survival crisis that today show a really small number of members (14/15 members). As it is evident to all that a club with such a numeric situation face extinction, it is appropriate that, during the year, Presidents, the Executive and members of these clubs get active to secure the life of these clubs that run the risk to disappear, leaving without Rotary some places of our territory (my thought goes to the club of Marsala Lilibeo –Egady Islands that passed away last year and Gozo Club in particular that is facing a situation of crisis).
But membership and planning of service are two elements, as President Mehta said, that go together: if a club has a small number of members, it cannot carry on projects of service with a strong and important impact on the territory and vice versa, if a club does not succeed to build a strong action of service, it will see the growth of memberships.
It is necessary to review all our policy of growth, avoiding counterproductive shortcut.
By the way, if in an area of our District, where Rotary is not present, it will be created the conditions for the birth of a new club not deriving from the fracture inside other clubs, un such a case the creation of a new club will be welcome and above all effective for a healthy growth
An important role for the increase of the membership of a club from this year can be played by Rotaract.
In fact, Rotaract from a simple Rotary program, this year, following the resolution of the Council of Legislation of 2019, changed its type of affiliation.
After this historic resolution, last April, President of R.I. Mark Maloney, has nominated the task force Elevate Rotaract, composed of Rotaractians and Rotarians to recommend updates to the legislation, to reflect better the new Rotaract status.
Today Rotaract has become a real partner of Rotary and has become part of the big Rotarian family.
All this determines a heavier weight of Rotaract in the overall activities of our movement, but also new burdens as all Rotaractian activities are more bound to those of Rotary and of the referring District.
I must underline that in such a sense, the first signals of this new status gained by Rotaract in our District are very comfortable and the overall climax is excellent, Rotaract has showed a full sharing of District projects of great impact and the new situation, determined from Elevate Rotaract will produce for sure a growth of all Rotarian movement.
In short, I think that it is necessary to look at the future with a timid optimism for membership.
We have overcome, without great losses the dark night of pandemic and we have avoided the number shoulder strap that would have devastating for the whole organization.
Now it is the time to restart: Rotary restarts with a renewal enthusiasm of “Wanting to do”, because at the end, let us remember all this, we will be judged not for what we said but for what we will have done.
