Care socie e cari soci,

il calendario rotariano si apre col mese di gennaio, dedicato all’Azione professionale.

Essa costituisce il collante che tiene unito il Rotary International che, come noto, è un’organizzazione che si fonda sulla valorizzazione della professionalità dei suoi iscritti con un obiettivo fortemente umanitario. Il Rotary, infatti, è costituito da professionisti, i quali dedicano una parte del loro tempo e della loro competenza professionale al servizio degli altri, utilizzando strategie di service. Tuttavia, è appena il caso di ricordare che il Rotary indica un percorso preciso per svolgere la propria attività rotariana, secondo i princìpi costitutivi dell’associazione. Infatti, in primis si richiede che il rotariano ottemperi a certe indicazioni fissate dai padri fondatori e da Paul Harris in particolare:

1. si richiede che vengano sviluppati rapporti interpersonali, finalizzati soprattutto a opportunità di servizio.
2. si considera imprescindibile il ricorso a princìpi etici di alto profilo nello svolgimento delle attività professionali e nei rapporti di lavoro.
3. si applica “l’ideale del servire” nella vita personale, professionale e sociale di ciascun rotariano
4. si pone a fondamento della vita di ciascun appartenente al Rotary la comprensione fra i popoli, l’accoglienza, la pace, la lotta contro ogni discriminazione (razziale, religiosa, …).
5. si stabilisce una rete internazionale di professionisti e appartenenti al mondo del lavoro con l’intento di creare una realtà internazionale unita dall’ideale del servire.
6. si riconosce l’importanza di tutte le professioni e di tutti i lavori.

Da quanto esposto si comprende che qualsiasi attività professionale all’interno del Rotary deve avere una forte connotazione etica e sociale, come del resto sottolinea il motto stesso del Rotary International, che nel tempo è mutato, ma che nel complesso ha sempre rispecchiato i valori più autentici del Rotary. Infatti, già nel 1911 alla Convention di Portland venne approvato il motto. He profits most who serves best (“Chi serve meglio ha più profitto”), ma successivamente venne adottato il più efficace Service not self (“servizio, non egoismo”).

Infine, nel 1989 il consiglio di Legislazione fissò il nuovo motto che ancora oggi è adottato dal Rotary International: Service above self (“servire al di sopra di ogni interesse personale”).

A questo punto la domanda sorge spontanea: siamo certi che il mondo rotariano nel nostro Distretto sia tutto orientato verso il rispetto di questi princìpi che abbiamo indicato in precedenza? Siamo sicuri che non prevalgano mai interessi personali nei comportamenti professionali? Possiamo affermare con certezza che siano sempre princìpi etici di alto profilo ad ispirare il comportamento di chi si fregia dell’appellativo di rotariano?

Si tratta, com’è facile arguire, di questioni di non scarsa rilevanza, perché su questo versante si gioca, alla fine, la credibilità dell’intero movimento rotariano all’interno del Distretto.

Questi interrogativi inoltre dovrebbero essere tenuti ben presenti quando si tratta di ammettere una nuova socia/socio nei nostri sodalizi.

Il presidente internazionale di quest’anno Shekhar Mehta, nella sua allocuzione all’Assemblea internazionale, ha puntualizzato che, quando si vuole cooptare una socia/socio all’interno di un club, occorre riflettere  parecchio sulla questione relativa alla sua qualità, intesa non soltanto come qualità professionale, che in realtà è facilmente individuabile, ma anche, e soprattutto, come qualità umana, che si fonda sul concetto di integrity, a cui nella nostra lingua corrispondono nomi come “onestà”, “correttezza”, “onorabilità”, “probità”, “moralità”, “rettitudine”, “lealtà”,… Se in colui che entra nel nostro sodalizio non ci sono questi valori, allora meglio evitare un’ammissione che potrebbe rivelarsi nociva.

Ma l’azione professionale si esplica anche nei cosiddetti Global Grants, progetti di impatto internazionale che consentono di intervenire in Paesi che necessitano del nostro aiuto. E’ questo il caso, ad esempio, del Global Grant che il nostro Distretto, insieme con quello sardo-laziale, ha con il Marocco sul tema della talassemia, una patologia che in questo Paese è endemica. Da anni i nostri medici lavorano in sintonia con quelli marocchini e dalla sinergia dei due Paesi, l’Italia e il Marocco, è nata una cooperazione sistematica, che sta producendo risultati significativi nell’ambito di questa patologia.

Infine, il mio augurio e il mio invito è che, data l’importanza che l’azione professionale riveste all’interno del Rotary International, nel mese di gennaio tutti i club possano organizzare un incontro (in presenza o da remoto) per valorizzare questo settore davvero strategico per la nostra gloriosa associazione.

Letter of the month of January 2022

Dear Friends,

The Rotarian calendar opens with the month of January, dedicated to Professional Action.

It constitutes the clue that holds the Rotary International together, that is, as it is known, an organization based on the enhancement of professionalism of its members with a strongly humanitarian objective. Rotary, in fact, is made up of professionals, who devote part of their time and professional competence to the service of others, using strategies of service.

However, it hardly needs to be remembered, that Rotary indicates a precise path to carry out our rotarian activity, according to the constitutive principles of the association.in fact, in primis it is requested that the Rotarian complies with certain indications set up by the Founding Fathers and by Paul Harris in particular.

1. it is requested that personal relationship aimed at opportunities of service are developed;
2. It is considered essential the use of high- profile ethical principles in the development of professional activities and in work relationships;
3. It is applied the “ideal of service” in personal , professional, social life of every Rotarian;
4. It stands as a foundation of the life of every member of Rotary the understanding among people, inclusion, peace, the fight against all ( racial, religious…)discrimination;
5. It is established an international net of professionals and people belonging to the world of work, with the purpose of creating an International reality united by the ideal of service;
6. It is recognized the importance of all professions and works.

From what already said, it can be understood that every professional activity inside Rotary must have a strong ethic and social connotation as it is pointed out from the same motto of Rotary International, that during time has changed, but that all in all, has always respected the most authentic values of Rotary.

In fact at Portland Convention, in 1911,  the motto “He profits most who serves best” was approved, but subsequently the most effective one: ”Service not self” was adopted. In the end, in1989, the Legislation Council stated a new motto that today again is adopte by Rotary International: “Service above the self”.

At this point, the question arises spontaneously: are we certain that the rotarian world in our District is all oriented towards the respect of these principles that we previously indicated?

Are we sure that personal interests never prevail in professional behaviors?

Can we affirm with certainty that high-level ethical principles must always inspire the behavior of those who boast in appellation of Rotarian?

These are matters, as it can be understood, of no small importance, because on this side the credibility of the whole rotarian movement in the District is at stake.

These questions, further, should be kept in mind when we must admit a new member in our clubs.

The International President of this year Shekhar Mehta in his allocution at the International Assembly, has pointed out that when we want to admit a new member inside a club, we must reflect a lot on her/his qualities, not only on professional qualities, that can be easily identifiable, but also and above all on human quality, that is based on the concept of integrity, called in our language as Honesty, correctness, honors, probity, morality and righteousness

If these values are not present in this person who enters into our association, then it is better to avoid such an admission that could be harmful.

But the professional action is done also in the so- called Global Grants that our District, together with Sardo-Laziale District, has with Morocco on the theme of Thalassemia, a pathology that in this country is epidemic. For years, our doctors have been working together with those from Morocco and from this synergy of two countries Italy and Morocco, a systematic cooperation started that is producing significant results in the field of this pathology.

At the end my wish and my invitation is that, considering the importance of professional action inside Rotary International, in the month of January all clubs can organize a meeting in presence or by zoom to enhance this strategic field for our glorious association.
