Lettera del Governatore Ottobre2021

Carissime amiche ed amici,

con il mese di ottobre entriamo nel quarto mese del nostro mandato, che ha avuto inizio, come tutti sapete, il primo di luglio.

Questi mesi sono stati già molto ricchi di operatività e fervidi di iniziative progettuali: infatti,  tutti i club, o quasi tutti, sono in azione per realizzare progetti di notevole impatto sia sull’ambiente sia sull’alfabetizzazione e stanno per “partire” i progetti legati alla salute. Intanto  ho il piacere di comunicarvi che soprattutto due progetti distrettuali (“Piantumazione di alberi” e “S.O.S. Api”) hanno riscosso un successo clamoroso, sol che si pensi che per il primo sono già state individuate quasi tutte le aree per la piantumazione e che per il secondo abbiamo  già raggiunto l’inaspettato e lusinghiero risultato di oltre 300 adozioni. Una soddisfazione ulteriore è costituita anche dal fatto che al progetto S.O.S. Api hanno partecipato anche numerosi club Rotaract e alcuni club Interact, a dimostrazione che l’intera “famiglia rotariana” si è mobilitata su questo progetto, che per altro è molto raccomandato pure dai vertici del Rotary International. Inoltre anche il progetto ”Riqualifica un luogo della tua città” è andato avanti e anzi è stato il primo in assoluto a trovare una risposta puntualecon la “sistemazione e ripulitura” del Chiostro normanno di Lipari, per merito del Club di Lipari- Arcipelago eoliano, che ringrazio per la tempestiva iniziativa di servizio.

Naturalmente non bisogna mai rallentare l’azione di service  anche davanti alla soddisfazione di un progetto realizzato. Infatti il nostro presidente Mehta, affermando in sede di Assemblea Internazionale che “bisogna servire di più”, ci ha voluto comunicare non solo che la nostra missionè il service, ma soprattutto che dobbiamo orientare tutte le nostre risorse umane in questa nobile “missione” che è peculiare della nostra associazione e che ci qualifica come “Rotary del fare” in perfetta linea con i princìpi del nostro fondatore Paul Harris, espressione fulgida del pragmatismo americano dei primi del “secolo breve”. Tale politica del “fare” peraltro oggi acquista ancor di più grande rilevanza davanti ai numerosi problemi che affliggono la nostra società.

Ma ottobre nel calendario rotariano è anche il mese dello sviluppo economico e comunitario e quindi vi invito tutti  cercare dibattere questa strada. In  altri termini, si tratta di sostenere le capacità imprenditoriali dei diversi territori, a sostegno dello sviluppo socio-economico; di creare opportunità di lavoro; di rendere migliori le condizioni di vita delle comunità svantaggiate e così provate dalle conseguenze della pandemia. Sono obiettivi complessi e non è facile raggiungerli, ma il Rotary può anche questo, se mette in azione tutte le proprie risorse umane e professionali. In particolare occorre mettere in campo tutta una serie di attività progettuali che possano risultare utili per creare service di notevole impatto sui territori. Ma come? Con quali strategie?  Io penso che bisognerebbe orientarsi in particolare nei seguenti ambiti: in primo luogo impegnarsisulla formazione professionale d’intesa con l’Assessorato regionale competente (con cui abbiamo già firmato un protocollo d’intesa nel corso della nostra Assemblea di formazione); in secondo luogo cercare di fornire un sostegno a startup che abbiano un progetto economicamente sostenibile; e inoltre favorire l’accesso al microcredito e lo sviluppo di strutture aziendali che operino in ambito agricolo, laddove siano impegnate sul versante dell’adozione di nuove tecnologie. 

In definitiva il nostro Distretto in questo mese si impegni, per quanto possibile, ad aiutare la resilienza dell’economia siciliana a maltese dopo i gravissimi guasti prodotti da una pandemia, che ha distrutto parte del nostro sistema produttivo. Certamente noi rotariani non abbiamo gli strumenti idonei per favorire direttamente tale ripresa, in quanto per raggiungere tale obiettivo occorrerebbero notevoli mezzi economici, progettualità imprenditoriale visionaria e soprattutto capacità politica che sappia guardare lontano. Ma noi rotariani abbiamo uno strumento importante: abbiamo una professionalità ampiamente diffusa nei territori che può orientare le scelte della politica e degli imprenditori a condizione che sappiano guardare la realtà socio-economica sine ira et studio e cioè in maniera spassionata, tenendosi ben lontani da scelte parziali e talvolta anche clientelari (in passato è successo!), che finiscono con lo sterilizzare qualsiasi ipotesi di crescita equilibrata e reale.

Il mio invito è, quindi, che i club si impegnino, area per area a favorire incontri, tavole rotonde, dibattiti, con la presenza di tutti gli attori protagonisti, per una presa di coscienza collettiva su ciò che bisogna fare per favorire unosviluppo sano ed equilibrato dei territori sui quali essi insistono. Anni fa, e precisamente nel 2000-2001 il Presidente Internazionale dell’anno rotariano Frank Devlin, recentemente scomparso, propose come motto dell’anno “creare la consapevolezza, passare all’azione”, una indicazione che mi è rimasta nel cuore, in quanto in quel tempo ebbi l’onore di presiedere il club di cui faccio parte, il Palermo Sud. Ecco, io vorrei che noi in questa difficile congiuntura per il Paese e soprattutto per i nostri territori, svolgessimo da protagonisti il compito di “creare la consapevolezza”, analizzando spassionatamente le deficienze che caratterizzano la nostra economia post Covid.

Letter of the Month of October

Dear Friends,

With the month of October, we enter in the 4th months of our mandate, that started , as you all know, on the 1st of July.

These months have already been very rich in activities, full of project initiatives: in fact all the clubs, or almost a lot of them, are in action making projects of significant impact either on environment or in literacy and projects on health are about to start. In the meanwhile , I am pleased to communicate you that in particular two district projects  (“trees plantation and S.O.S bees”) have achieved great success, if we consider that for the first project almost all the areas for plantation have found and that for the second  we have already achieved  unexpected and flattering result  of beyond 300 adoptions.

A further satisfaction is constituted from the fact that numerous clubs, Rotaract, and some Interact have participated to the project “S.O.S Bees” to prove that the whole “Rotarian Family”has  mobilized on this project, that is also highly recommended from Rotary International Summit.

Further also the project “Upgrade a place of your town “ has moved on and has been the first ever to find a timely answer with the “arrangement and cleaning” of the Norman Kiosk of Lipari, thanks the Lipari Club” Eolian  Archipelago, that I thank for the timely service initiative.

Of course we must never slow down service action even in front of the satisfaction of projects carried out.

In fact our President Mehta, stating in the International Assembly that “ we must serve more” wanted to communicate us not only that our mission is the service, but above all that we must orient  all our human resources in this noble “mission”that is peculiar to our association and that qualifies us  as “ the Rotary of doing”perfectly in line with the principles of our Founder Paul Harris, fulgid expression of the American pragmatism  of the first of the “short century”

Such a politics “of doing” moreover today  acquires even greater importance faced with the numerous problems that afflict our society.

But October, in the Rotarian calendar, is also the month of the economic and community development  and so I invite you all to try to beat this path. In other words, it is about supporting the entrepreneurial ability of different territories, in support of the socio-economic development¸to create job opportunity; to improve life conditions of the disadvantages communities also tried by the consequences of the pandemic.

These are complex objectives and it is not easy to achieve them, But Rotary  can do also this , if it puts into action all its human and professional resources. In particular it is necessary to put in the field all a series of project activities that can result useful to create service of remarkable impact in our territories.

But How? With what strategies? I think that we should orient in particular in such fields: first of all we should engage in professional training, in agreement with the competent Regional Department (with which we have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding  during our Training Assembly), secondly we should try to provide support to startups that have economically sustainable projects; and further we should promote access to micro-credit and development of company structures that operate in the agricultural sector, where they are committed in terms of the adoption of new technologies.

Definitely in this month, our District must dedicate itself , as far as possible, to help the resilience of Sicilian  and  Maltese economy, after the serious damages caused by the pandemic, that destroyed part of our productive system.

Certainly we Rotarian have not the suitable instruments to directly favor this recovery, as in order to reach such a goal, remarkable economis instruments, visionary entrepreneurial planning and above all farsighted political capacity  will be necessary.

But we Rotarians have got an important instrument, we have got a widespread  professionalism  in territories that can orient the choices of politics and of entrepreneurs under conditions that they are able to look at the socio-economic reality sine ira et studio that is passionately, keeping well away from partial and sometimes clientele choices  (it happened in the past!), that end to sterilize hypotheses of  balance and real growth.

My invitation is that all the clubs can dedicate themselves , area by area, to encourage meetings, rotarian tables, debates, with all the protagonists, for a collective awareness on what is needed to do in order to favor a healthy and balanced development  on the involved territories.

Some years ago, and precisely in 2000-2001, the International President of the Rotarian year , Frank Devlin, recently passed away,  proposed as the motto of the year “ to create awareness,  to pass to action”, an indication that remained in my heart, as in that time, I had the honor to preside my Club, of which I am a member, Palermo Sud.

I would like us, in this difficult time for our country and above all for our territories, to perform the task as protagonists to “ create awareness” analyzing deficiencies dispassionately tha characterize our economy post covid.
