Lettera del Governatore giugno 2021

Care amiche, cari amici,

eccoci qui a giugno e oggi vi inoltro il mio ultimo messaggio come Governatore del nostro Distretto Rotary 2110.

Quest’anno sarà stato speciale perché non era in totale assonanza con ciò che avevo e che avevamo immaginato! Il corso della vita è tale da riservarci momenti inattesi, non conformi alle nostre previsioni, pieni di sorprese più o meno buone, disseminate di imponderabili che sfuggono a qualsiasi logica razionale poiché il loro verificarsi è quantomeno inaspettato! Mi ero preparato a svolgere un anno normale e con Ina eravamo andati a formarci per affrontarlo nel migliore dei modi possibili. Siamo andati a Milano, Roma, Norimberga, Catania ed infine a San Diego all’Assemblea internazionale, poi siamo stati colti di sorpresa dalla pandemia e non eravamo preparati, nessuno ci aveva preparato ad un evento del genere ed abbiamo reagito, non ci siamo fermati, affrontando anche sacrifici non prevedibili.

Ma, come ho dovuto dire più volte, non ha senso riscrivere la storia; teniamo di questi momenti complessi solo gli aspetti che, nonostante tutto, voglio chiamare positivi.

Il primo di questi riguarda l’adattamento che siamo stati in grado di dimostrare in questo anno; non abituati a nuove forme di riunioni rotariane, abbiamo saputo appropriarci degli strumenti di comunicazione contemporanei per permetterci di mantenere il legame tra noi; era un mio desiderio e Voi avete raccolto questa sfida: tutti i club hanno continuato la loro azione attraverso questi strumenti e alla fine non sono stati vincolati da questo uso.

Certo, la dimensione conviviale dei nostri regolari incontri faccia a faccia è stata in qualche modo minata, ma la realtà e la sostanza del gesto rotariano è stata preservata; anzi, alcuni mi hanno detto della maggiore efficienza provata da questa tipologia di scambi. Al di là delle difficoltà tecniche che possono essere sorte qua e là, il dialogo è continuato, i progetti procedevano e la vita dei nostri gruppi ha potuto, in queste condizioni, seguire un percorso ovviamente diverso dal solito ma comunque sempre rivolto al servizio.

Nonostante tutto, posso registrare un primo quadrimestre intenso di impegni in presenza, nei club e nelle istituzioni, incontrando il Presidente della Regione e molti assessori regionali e stipulando convenzioni che hanno prodotto notevoli risultati. Ho incontrato circa 100 sindaci sia delle città metropolitane che di piccoli Comuni, vescovi, rettori, sovrintendenti e direttori di Aziende ospedaliere, ed un ultimo trimestre, ancora una volta in presenza, a inaugurare i molteplici risultati dei vostri servizi, nei club di tutto il distretto, e nelle più importanti istituzioni di questa regione per siglare impegni che accompagneranno il Rotary per i prossimi anni.

Il secondo punto riguarda la fantastica mobilitazione dei club del distretto a favore della Rotary Foundation: mai si era raggiunta una così alta contribuzione pro-capite, la più alta di sempre nella storia del nostro Distretto, e questo Vi fa onore. Un anno impreziosito da tre nuovi Major Donor e tre Benefattori.

Vi siete mobilitati come mai per progetti e servizi alle Comunità vicine e a quelle lontane, nella lotta al famigerato coronavirus (chiamato anche COVID 19). Il risultato è impressionante sia per quello che si evidenzia in termini di risultati quantitativi sia leggendo l’impegno che avete dimostrato nei confronti di coloro che sono stati colpiti, vittime dirette o indirette, come aiutanti in qualsiasi forma. Un vero successo nella nostra risposta agli appelli a noi rivolti nei confronti della pandemia.

Il terzo punto, infine, riguarda la comunicazione. Mai prima d’ora il Rotary è riuscito ad entrare nelle case di tantissimi, raccontando delle sue idee, dei suoi progetti, dei suoi service, come quest’anno. Siamo riusciti a ristabilire quella corretta comunicazione capace di farci apprezzare, stimare, prendere come modello di vita.

E poi, poiché è tempo di fare il punto su questo anno “speciale”, vorrei ricordarvi che tanti temi che vi ho proposto per il 2020/2021, hanno tutti prodotto grandi risultati sia sul piano dell’azione che su quello della coesione interna e dell’immagine.

Vorrei menzionare i notevoli progressi dei nostri Rotaract e dei nostri Interact sia nelle azioni che hanno avviato che nell’espansione del numero dei loro soci; la famiglia del Rotary International, si è ancora di più completamente integrata e possono e devono svilupparsi ulteriormente; la lettura che ho delle loro identità e delle loro potenzialità, grazie alle visite che ho avuto il piacere di far loro, mi consolida nella visione estremamente positiva che emerge da questi contatti. Incoraggio nuovamente i Rotary club ad avvicinarsi ai Rotaract e agli Interact esistenti e / o, meglio ancora, a promuoverne di nuovi; questo approccio fa parte di un rapporto nel quale la sinergia fra tre generazioni (o anche quattro…) può essere portatrice di significato, dinamismo e sviluppo positivo per entrambe le parti.

Qualche parola sulla vita dei club: in termini di effettivo, oggi siamo al di sopra della soglia dei 3650 soci nel nostro distretto; il consolidamento dei nostri club non è un fenomeno una tantum e sono convinto che questo slancio sarà continuato e amplificato grazie all’azione di chi ci seguirà.

Ho avuto l’onore di consegnare undici nuove Carte Costitutive: creando quattro nuovi Rotary Club, quattro nuovi Rotaract club e tre nuovi Interact Club.

Parlare della vita dei Club, proprio nel mese ad essi dedicato, significa anche ringraziare tutti voi per la favolosa accoglienza che ci avete riservato quando noi, Ina ed io, abbiamo visitato il nostro distretto; la cordialità, la serietà e il coinvolgimento di ognuno in questi momenti memorabili che abbiamo vissuto insieme costituiscono uno dei ricordi più importanti del “mio” anno di Servizio e della mia vita da Rotariano!

Resta da citare l’azione professionale su cui abbiamo investito molto in questo periodo; attraverso questo processo e in linea con quanto avevamo immaginato, rimaniamo al centro del tema che mi sembra essere uno dei principali vettori per promuovere l’immagine del Rotary International; il nostro Movimento e il servizio agli altri di cui si avvale non sono in alcun modo estranei alla dimensione economica, sociale e civica del nostro tempo e del nostro ambiente; abbiamo, nelle nostre file forze vitali (attive o meno) che possono prestare il loro aiuto alla risoluzione dei problemi contemporanei in un approccio diverso da quello esclusivamente finanziario. Mostriamo cosa sappiamo e possiamo fare prima di annunciare chi siamo; questo è il feedback positivo che avevo lanciato all’inizio del mio mandato; questo è ciò che stiamo vedendo nello sviluppo dell’operazione “Il Rotary non si ferma” che gridai, solo un anno fa, al Distretto, nel momento massimo dello sconforto da pandemia

Avevo chiesto alle Commissioni e, principalmente, ai Club, di mettere in atto un’azione collettiva intesa ad illustrare concretamente cosa può fare il ROTARY. Vi incoraggio vivamente a continuare quanto è stato intrapreso perché, al di là di rinvii e altre cancellazioni cicliche, la qualità di quanto realizzato e / o pianificato è perfettamente in linea con lo spirito del nostro approccio.

Consentitemi di concludere questa lettera esprimendo pubblicamente tutti i miei ringraziamenti al fantastico team che mi ha accompagnato in questo viaggio del Rotary: il mio staff, tutti gli ADG, i Delegati RF, i Presidenti di Commissione ed i componenti e tutti i Delegati delle Task Force.

Abbiamo vissuto insieme momenti ad alta voce (qualunque sia la loro origine e intensità), momenti stressanti (fa parte del “gioco”), ore esilaranti (queste sono quelle che ricorderemo)!

Ho avuto modo di lavorare in perfetta sintonia con chi mi ha preceduto, Valerio, e con chi mi seguirà, Gaetano, Orazio e Goffredo con i quali abbiamo concordato un piano di leadership pluriennale; una vera complementarità, un vero arricchimento reciproco e permanente, una trasparenza nelle parole e nelle azioni, insomma, un dream team!  

E prima di concludere, Vi ripeto quanto sono orgoglioso di aver potuto servire il Rotary International e il nostro distretto al vostro fianco; torno a lavorare umilmente nel mio club con la certezza che il nostro impegno ci può permettere non solo di continuare a scolpire, con convinzione, le pietre che sono la base dell’edificio rotariano ma anche di visualizzare la cattedrale che non manca di derivarne.

In questo fine mandato, una raccomandazione vorrei lasciarvi in eredità: quella di riportare nei club tutti i Rotariani che sono stati costretti a non frequentare per motivi di salute. La cosa più difficile sarà, infatti, riconquistare chi, dopo questo lungo periodo di assenza, ritenga di poter continuare a vivere senza Rotary.

Teniamo questi Rotariani con noi. Ciascuno per le sue capacità, per la propria esperienza può fornire aiuto, consiglio, supporto. L’importante, in questo approccio, è essere una forza di proposta che sia in grado, tra l’altro, di anticipare la domanda. È difficile, per coloro che sono angosciati per il futuro, fare appello a coloro che li circondano, persino a un amico. Ma dobbiamo rimanere coesi e decisi. Il nostro impegno e la nostra azione di servizio non devono e non possono vacillare.

Accanto a ciò, è necessario guardarci intorno, nei club, e guardare ai nostri amici professionisti, ai commercianti, agli artigiani che stanno soffrendo e soffriranno a lungo, per le ripercussioni di una chiusura prolungata e di una difficile ripresa economica. Contattiamoli e chiediamo loro di lavorare insieme ad un piano di ripresa che è, in primis, valoriale.

Questa è l’ultima missiva mensile. Sono stato onorato e felice di poter comunicare con ognuno di voi attraverso questa “Lettera del Governatore”.

Essere un Governatore è prima di tutto un grande onore. È una mole infinita di lavoro, e-mail e telefonate, ma è un lavoro molto gratificante, soprattutto quando sei circondato, come lo sono stato io, da Amici e rotariani di grande spessore umano e professionale.

Essere Governatore significa essere il rappresentante del Presidente Internazionale e trasmettere le sue priorità.

Essere Governatore significa anche rappresentare il più degnamente possibile tutti i Rotariani del distretto in assemblee, conferenze o riunioni, incontri con le istituzioni, gli altri club service, il mondo variegato delle associazioni.

Essere un Governatore è un’opportunità per conoscere i club del Distretto, tutti molto diversi tra loro, e per incontrare grandi persone: Ciascuno di Voi e le Vostre famiglie.

Essere un Governatore significa scoprire una moltitudine di progetti e azioni che rendono grande il Rotary.

Essere un Governatore significa ascoltare gli altri e rispettare le scelte degli altri; fornire aiuto o consulenza, quando necessario e quando viene richiesto; è garantire il corretto funzionamento dei club e del Distretto.

Infine, essere un Governatore è l’occasione per ringraziare tutti i Rotariani che si mettono in gioco, si dedicano e servono la causa rotariana.

Per questo, nonostante il Covid 19, riconosco che guidare questo Distretto 2110 mi ha portato indiscutibile piacere, soddisfazione e appagamento del mio alto senso rotariano, e non posso ringraziare abbastanza coloro che hanno contribuito a questo successo.

Auguro a tutti, a tutti, ai vostri cari, la realizzazione dei progetti per voi importanti in pace, con il piacere di lavorare nel Rotary, per il Rotary, e quindi per l’intera società.

Dear Friends,

Here we are in June and today I give you my last message as a Governor of our District Rotary 2110.

This year will have been  special  because it was  not in assonance with what I or we  had imagined.

The course of life is such  to reserve for us unexpected moments, not in accordance with our forecasts ; it was full of more or less good surprises, of  imponderable events that esacape any rational logic. 

I had prepared myself for a normal year and, together with Ina,  we had gone  and trained to face it in the best possible way.

We went to Milan, Rome, Nuremberg, Catania and at last in San Diego to the International Assembly.

Then we were taken by surprise by the pandemic and we were not prepared; nobody has prepared  us to such an event and we reacted , we did not stop ourselves, facing also unexpected sacrifices

But as I had to say many times, it has no sense to rewrite history; we have to keep of these complex moments only those aspects that I want to call positive.

The first of these ,is the adjustment that we were able to show during this year; we were not used to these new types of Rotarian meetings and we had been able to appropriate of contemporary communication tool to allow us to maintain the link among us.

This was my wish and you have taken up this challenge, in fact all the clubs continued their action through these tools, without being  bound by this use.

Our convivial dimension of our regular meetings in presence in some way was brought up, but the substance of Rotary has been preserved, and some of you found  this type of exchange more efficient.

Beyond the technichal difficulties  that coul have happened, our dialogue continued, our projects went on and the life of our members continued a different path but always aimed at rotarian service.

In spite of everything, I can register a first four-month period full of engagements in presence; in clubs and in Institutions, meeting The President of The Region, many regional councilors, entering into agreements , that produced outstanding results.

I met about 100 Mayors either in big cities or small municipalities, Bishops, Deans, Superintendents and Directors of Hospitals.

The last three-month period, always in presence, I went to inaugurate your many results of service in clubs all over the District and in the most important Institutions of this Region to sign commitments that will accompany Rotary for the next years.

The second point concerns the extraordinary mobilization of the clubs of our District in favour of Rotary Foundation .

It never happened to reach such a high contribution pro-capite , the highest contribution in the history of our District and this makes you honor.

This was a year with three new Major Donors and three  Benefactors.

You have mobilized like never before for projects and services to close and far Communities, in the fight against the infamous corona virus (also called COVID 19). The result was impressive either for quantitative results or reading the commitment that you showed towards those who have been affected , direct or undirect victims, as support workers  in any form.

This was a true success in our response to appeals directed to us against the pandemic.

The third point concerns the communication . Never before Rotary suceeded to enter the houses of so many people , telling of its ideas, projects, services as during this year.

We suceeded in enstablishing  the correct communication , able to make us appreciate, esteem,  to take as a model of life .

And then, as this is the right time to take stock of this special year, I woul like to remind you that the so many themes I proposed to you for the 2020/2021, have all produced great results either on the action plan or in that of internal cohesion and image.

I would like to mention the outstanding progresses of our Rotaract and Interact for the actions they started and the increasing in the number of members; the family of Rotary International has integrated itself and they can and must develop more and more; the vision I got of their identities and potentialities during my visits to them is extremely positive .

I encourage again Rotary clubs to stay close to Rotaract and Interact or better to promote new clubs.

This approach among three generations (or even four) can be bearer of meaning, dynamism, and positive development for both sides.

Some consideration on the life of our clubs: in terms of effective, today we are over 3650 members in our District ; the consolidation of our clubs is not a single phenomenon, because I am sure that the number is going to increase thank the action that will follow us.

I got the honor to give 11 new Constitutional Charts, founding 14 Rotary Clubs, 4 new Rotaract and 3 Interact Clubs.

Talking about the life of Clubs in the month dedicated to them  means also to thank you for your fabulous welcome that you reserved to us, when  Ina and I visited our District: friendship, seriousness and commitment of each of you during these unforgettable moments we lived together, make up one of the most important moments of “My” year of service and of my Rotarian life!

I have to mention the professional action where we invested a lot in this time:

through this process and as we had immagine, we stay in the very theme that  is also the best way to promote the image of Rotary International.

Our movement and service toward others are close to the economic, social and civic dimension of our time and environment; we have vital (more or less active) forces inside our clubs that can  give their support to the resolution of contemporary problems in a different way , that is different from the financial one.

Let’s show what we can do before announcing who we are; this is the positive feedback  I told you at the beginning of my mandate; this is what we are seeing in the development of operation:” Rotary never stops” as I said one year ago  to the District, in the moment of maximum  discouragement during pandemic.

I asked the commissions and above all the clubs to implement collective action to show what Rotary can do.

I strongly encourage you to continue what you started because, beyond referrral  and cyclic  cancellation the quality of what already done, or planned is perfectly in line with the spirit  of our approach.

Let me conclude this letter expressing  all my thank to my wonderful team that accompany me

 in this journey of Rotary, my staff and all ADG, Delegates RF. Presidents of Commissions and the components and the delegates of Task Force.

We lived together  wonderful moments, (of various origin and intensity)stressful moments (this is part of the game, hilarious moments(we will remeber these!)

I had the chance to work in perfect harmony with Valerio,who was before me,  and with Gaetano, who will follow me, Orazio e Goffredo with whom we worked on a pluriennal plan of leadership; this was a true complementary,  a true enrichment for all of us a real transparency in words and actions, in short a real team!

Before concluding I want to repeat you how proud I was to serve Rotary International  and our District closet o you.

I will be back to work in  my club now with humility certain that our commitment can allow us to sculp the stones that underlieRotarian building, but also to view a cathedral that can come out of them.

In this mandate I want to leave you a reccomandation : to bring back to clubs all Rotarians who were not able to attend Rotary for health reasons.

The most difficult thing will be to regain  those, who, after such a long period of absence, think to be able to live without Rotary

Let’s keep these Rotarians with us. Each of us with his skill and experience can give help, suggestion,support.

The important thing of this approach is to be a proposal able to anticipate the answer,

It is difficult for those who are worried for the future, to appeal to those around them, even to a friend.

But we must stay cohesive and decisive.Our commitment and action of service must not and cannot waver.

It is necessary to look around us in our clubs and to look at our friends professionals, traders,  artisans who are suffering  and will suffer for a long time for a prolonged closure and a difficult economic recovery.

Let’s contact them asking them to work together on a recovery plan that is first of all based on values.

This is my last monthly letter.

I was honored and happy to be able to comunicate with each of you through this “Letter of Governor”.

To be a Governor also means to represent in the best way all the Rotarians of the District in assemblies, conferences, meetings with the institutions, other club service, the variegated world of associations.

To be a Governor  is an opportunity to know the clubs of the District, that are different  from each other and to meet special persons, each of you and your families.

To be a Governor means to discover a multitude of projects and actions that makes Rotary big.

To be a Governor means to  listen to other people and to respect the others’choices; to offer help or consulting, when necessary and when it is requested; it is to guarantee the correct functioning of clubs and of the District.

At the end, to be a Governor is the occasion to thank all Rotarians who get involved , who dedicate themselves and serve the Rotarian cause.

For all this despite of COVID 19, I admit that to lead this District 2110 brought me an indisputabile pleasure, satisfaction and contentment of my high Rotarian sense and I cannot thank enough those who contributed to this success.

I wish you, your families the realization of the projects that are important for you in peace, with the pleasure to work inside Rotary and for Rotary and therefore for the whole society.
