Lettera del Governatore Gennaio 2021

Carissime Amiche ed Amici Rotariani,
quello che abbiamo lasciato è un anno difficile e, soprattutto, funestato da lutti e da povertà
dilaganti che ancora ci toccano. Comincia un nuovo anno, che sarà certamente impegnativo ma con
alcune certezze in più e, ce lo auguriamo di cuore, in grado di assicurare all’umanità una migliore
risposta alle tante necessità che questa pandemia ha palesato ancora di più di quanto a noi tutti fossero
note.
Credo, amici carissimi, che, come capitò nelle due grandi guerre mondiali e nella depressione
economica del 1929, anche oggi ci viene chiesto d’essere presenti con le nostre professionalità, le nostre
competenze, le nostre abilità, i nostri saperi con la piena dedizione a servire al di sopra di ogni interesse
personale che ci ha sempre caratterizzati, ci contraddistingue e sarà da modello.
È, nell’alveo di questa considerazione, allora significativo avere presente che gennaio rappresenti, per
il Rotary, il mese dell’Azione Professionale.
Rotary è capacità di leadership, con l’implicazione evidente che ogni rotariano è invitato ad esprimere,
ancora più compiutamente in questo singolare momento storico, le sue qualità professionali, per dare
risposta, nei modi più adeguati e opportuni possibili, alle esigenze della società, ancor più quando le
condizioni socio-economiche del Paese, anche a causa di questa imprevedibile crisi sanitaria, sono
segnate dal perdurare di una situazione di crisi economica dalle proporzioni assolutamente
imprevedibili che hanno mortificato i lavoratori di molti comparti strategici, messo in difficoltà
moltissime aziende e famiglie, reso più vulnerabile il sistema sociale del nostro Paese e d’ogni nazione
del mondo.
Servire, dunque, deve essere, oggi con maggiore consapevolezza e determinazione, il nostro impegno.
Non basta più solo partecipare, che è stato ed è, già di per sé, un modo marginale di vivere il Rotary.
Non è più sufficiente. Servire è, nell’idea e nell’insegnamento di Paul Harris, fare Rotary con le proprie
professionalità e con la dedizione che dovrebbe renderci diversi e migliori, principalmente; servire è
raccontare con i fatti quotidiani e con la nostra disponibilità il proprio sapere, le proprie indiscusse
capacità specifiche legate alle nostre molteplici professionalità; è dare completezza e dare valore al
nostro operare in qualunque momento della nostra professione, secondo i principi a noi noti e che ci
contraddistinguono della correttezza e della rettitudine, oltre che del disinteresse personale per ciò che
stiamo facendo per gli altri, per le comunità in cui operiamo, per l’umanità grazie alla molteplicità di
progetti che la Rotary Foundation ci permette di portare avanti.

Servire il territorio, nella sua caratterizzazione locale prima di tutto e anche ai livelli nazionale ed
internazionale. Non mancano le occasioni e progetti per farlo con compiutezza e completezza. Anche
in questo caso, essere rotariani esprime non solo la capacità di cogliere le numerose occasioni che la
contemporaneità che viviamo presenta, ma anche il saper cercare con attenzione e con occhio vigile e,
perfino, crearne di nuove per operare e per offrire a tutta l’umanità le stesse opportunità.
La storia del Rotary è intrecciata dei numerosi esempi di rotariani che hanno dimostrato e dimostrano,
con il servizio quotidiano, il saper sacrificare se stessi, la propria famiglia, per rispondere alle tante
richieste e alle esigenze dei tanti che manifestano bisogni e necessità.
I nostri volontari del Rotary, quelli che forniscono i pasti caldi ai clochard, che assicurano una casa ai
senza tetto, le visite specialistiche a chi non può permetterselo, cibo e vestiti a chi non può sfamare i
propri figli, il calore umano ai bambini degli orfanotrofi e agli anziani delle case di riposo, costituiscono
un esempio perfetto del nostro modo di vivere il Rotary.
Tutti noi dovremmo essere volontari del “Servire”. Ma nel nostro caso specifico, come ho più volte
sottolineato anche in occasione della nomina della mia squadra distrettuale, si tratta di un gruppo di
militanti del service molto “specializzato”, una task force di professionisti nelle più impensabili
discipline dello scibile umano, decisamente pronti a mettere a disposizione di tutti, degli ultimi, dei
soli, dei marginalizzati, le loro professionalità, gratuitamente, in tutte le situazioni di emergenza. Una
sorta di protezione civile delle professioni.
È un modo decisamente diverso di manifestare il nostro impegno, che resta fortemente ancorato ad un
percorso di crescita indirizzato a procurarsi una più grande rilevanza in una prospettiva di medio e,
principalmente, di lungo periodo. E credo, lasciatemelo dire, non esiste modo migliore per assicurare
siffatto risultato se non quello di trascinare dentro questo sogno i nostri giovani e i nostri giovanissimi.
Ai giovani dobbiamo tramandare non solo i nostri saper fare ma anche i nostri saper essere e i nostri
valori; condizioni che rappresentano il miglior linguaggio che i nostri figli e i nostri giovani
comprendono, cioè l’esempio. Solo in questa maniera possiamo facilitare le condizioni che ci
consentono di parlare al nostro presente, più̀ che al nostro futuro e congiuntamente ad esso.
Guardare all’oggi e ai numerosi bisogni non dimenticandoci che il domani dipende da ciò che facciamo
nella quotidianità e da ciò che progettiamo per abbattere ogni forma inumana di differenza nel pianeta.
Con l’augurio, che anche con questa lettera rinnovo, di un sereno e produttivo anno nuovo con
l’immutata amicizia che dovrebbe scandire ogni nostro comportamento umano.

Dear Rotarian Friends,
What we have left is a difficult year and above all marred by rampant grief and poverty that
still affect us.
It begins a new year, that will certainly be challenging but with some more certainties.
This year, we sincerely wish it, can assure humanity a better response to the many needs that
this pandemic has also poured even more than we were all known.
I believe, my dearest friends, that, as happened in the two great world wars and the economic
depression of 1929, even today we are asked to be present with our professionalisms , our skills,
our abilities, our knowledge, with full dedication to serve above all personal interest that has
always characterized us, sets us apart and it will be a model.
And it is significant, in the context of this consideration, to have in mind that January
represents, for Rotary, the month of Professional Action. Rotary is the capacity of leadership,
with the obvious implication that each Rotarian is invited to express, more fully in this singular
historical moment, his professional qualities to respond, in the most adequate and opportune
ways possible, to the needs of society.
All these efforts are even more necessary when the socioeconomic conditions of the country ,
also due to this unpredictable health crisis, are marked by the persistence of this economic
crisis with unpredictable proportions, that mortified workers of many strategic sectors, put in
difficulty many companies and families, made the social system of our country and of each
nation more vulnerable.
To serve must be, today with greater awareness and determination, our commitment. It is no
longer enough only to partecipate, that it was and it is a marginal way to live Rotary.
It is no more sufficient. To serve is, in the idea and teaching of Paul Harris, to do Rotary with
our own professionalisms and with dedication that should make us mainly different and
better; to serve is to tell with daily actions with our availability, with our knowledge, our
undisputed specific skills linked to our multiple professional skills; it is to give completeness
and value to our work in every moment of profession, according to the principles of fairness
and righteousness that are known to us and that distinguish us, besides the personal lack of
interest for what we are doing for others, for the community where we operate, for humanity
thank to the multiplicity of projects that Rotary Foundation allows us to carry out.
To serve the territory, first of all in its own local characterization and then to national and
international levels. There is no shortage of occasions and project to do it with completeness.

Also in this case, to be Rotarian means not only the ability to seize the numerous opportunities
that contemporaneity, we live, presents, but also to know how to search, with attention and
watchful eye, and also to create new opportunities to operate and offer all humanity the same
opportunities .
The history of Rotary is interwined with the many examples of Rotarians who demonstrated
and demonstrate, with daily service, that they know how to sacrifice themselves , their families,
to respond to the many requests and needs of a lot of people who express needs and
necessities.
Our Rotarians volunteers, those who provide hot meals to clochards, who secure a home for
the homeless, specialist visits to those who cannot afford it, food and dresses to those who
cannot feed their children, human warmth to the children of orphanage, to the old people of
nursing homes, set a perfect example of our way of living Rotary.
We all should be volunteers of ”serving”.
But in our specific case, as I underlined so many times also during the nomination of my
district team, it is a group of very specialized militants of service, a task force of professionals
in the most various disciplines of human knowledge, ready to make their professionalism
available to everyone, to the last one, to the marginalized, free in all the situation of emergencyA sort of civil protection in the professions.
It is definitely a different way to express our commitment that is strongly anchored to a growth
path aimed at obtaining greater relevance in a medium and mainly long-term perspective.
And I believe, let me tell you, there is no better way to ensure this result than to drag our young
and very young people into this dream.
We have to pass on to the young people not only our know-how but also our knowing to be and
our values; conditions that represent the best language our children and young people can
understand, that is our example.
Only in this way we can facilitate the conditions that allow us to speak in our present, more
than in our future and in conjunction with it.
We should look at today and at the numerous needs without forgetting that tomorrow depends
on what we do in everyday life and on what we plan in order to break down all forms of human
indifference in our planet.
With the best wishes for a peaceful and productive new year, which I renew with this letter as
well, and with unchanged friendship that should mark every our human behavior.
