Lettera del Governatore ottobre 2020
Care amiche e cari amici,
il tema del mese di ottobre riguarda lo “Sviluppo economico e comunitario”.
In questi primi tre mesi, nel corso delle numerose visite amministrative ai Vostri Club ho avuto modo di apprezzare alcuni progetti che i club del nostro Distretto 2110, attenti e sensibili a questo argomento, stanno portando avanti in ambito Global Grant.
Sono queste iniziative meritevoli che, per le loro particolarità, sono certo saranno in grado di orientare altri rotariani e altri club.
Credo, l’ho ripetuto ripetutamente negli incontri, specie in quelli istituzionali, che l’esempio tangibile, quello che passa attraverso i nostri servizi e vive grazie ad essi, possa, in modo migliore di qualsivoglia parola, consigliare e guidare le nostre azioni quotidiane e i nostri modi di fare e di essere.
A questi club, ai loro presidenti, ai consigli direttivi, a tutti i soci, va la mia approvazione, il mio compiacimento sincero e il mio appoggio futuro.
Come Distretto 2110 stiamo guardando, con particolare e accresciuta attenzione, al tema della sostenibilità e dell’ambiente. Temi che, come saprete, ho preteso che fossero collegati allo sviluppo, al turismo e alle infrastrutture come volano di crescita del territorio. In un rapporto inscindibile e, talvolta, simbiotico. Temi che hanno conquistato una parte consistente dell’organigramma del nostro Distretto è una sfida epocale e il nostro Rotary, il nostro Distretto non può restare indietro e indifferente.
Se osserviamo il pianeta, infatti, noteremo che accanto ai molti paesi a economia avanzata, concorrenziali nell’organizzazione, nella tecnologia e nella logistica ne abbiamo altri, quelli che definiamo emergenti, che hanno una struttura economica arretrata e una percezione dell’ambiente e della sostenibilità, nulla o quasi, e comunque assai diversa da quella che stiamo maturando, talvolta con difficoltà, nelle nostre Comunità, anche grazie a una rinnovata attenzione dei giovani, in senso lato, e dei giovani interactiani e rotaractiani, in particolare. Per i paesi più̀ sviluppati la scelta (sulla quale ragionano) è se continuare a rimanere competitivi in una globalizzazione che potremmo definire commerciale e finanziaria, finalizzata ad una sempre maggiore ricchezza o, in alternativa, muoversi in una direzione più attenta e più sensibile all’ambiente, alle nuove generazioni e al futuro dell’umanità.
È necessario garantire e promuovere la libertà e la giustizia, la reciprocità̀ di rispetto e la fiducia, l’ambiente e il paesaggio, la flora e la fauna, con regole internazionali che tutelino l’ecosistema, prioritariamente, e collegandolo ad esso, anche il lavoro e gli investimenti strutturali.
Quegli investimenti che, non mi stancherò mai di dirlo, sono necessari più che mai alla nostra Sicilia e alla nostra Malta, per continuare a prospettare una maggior e più incisiva centralità nel Mediterraneo.
E, poi, accanto ai paesi sviluppati, sui quali dobbiamo tempestivamente intervenire, con la forza delle nostre idee, abbiamo i paesi in via di sviluppo e quelli nei quali è impossibile pensare allo sviluppo, stante il fatto che le guerre e le carestie ne rendono complesso anche solamente l’immaginazione.
Noi rotariani ci inseriamo, con i nostri valori e i nostri modi di essere, nelle une e nelle altre realtà. Certi di potere realizzare comunità̀ aperte, attente, solidali, dove è possibile assicurare i valori universali e costruire amicizia. Il Rotary, come ricordiamo sempre, proclama e difende i suoi valori, con una particolare attenzione alla leadership e all’etica, a garanzia di uno sviluppo economico e comunitario. Sviluppo economico e comunitario in grado di assicurare equità e un sistema in grado di offrire a ciascuno le opportunità per competere e per affermarsi.
Questo è certificabile se guardiamo i nostri interventi e i nostri investimenti nei paesi in via di sviluppo e se percorriamo la storia dei progetti rotariani. Con essi, oltre che offrire significative opportunità di sviluppo e, in alcuni casi, un’importante opportunità sanitaria, diamo origine a importanti effetti di contagio affinché si sviluppino, per imitazione positiva, altri interventi; in questo senso è evidente che il nostro Rotary può ancora fare molto (e si deve impegnare a farlo) nei paesi sottosviluppati. Queste sono le tante opportunità per prospettare le quali è necessario un significativo impegno di ciascuno di noi, di ciascuna professionalità della quale disponiamo.
Nei Rotary Club, come sto facendo io, incontro dopo incontro, è necessario parlare dell’economia del territorio; in quanto, considerati i livelli di professionalità̀ di cui disponiamo, possono i club non solo partorire proposte e suggerimenti ma anche, partendo da questi, determinare investimenti e correlate infrastrutture. Se avremo la capacità di interfacciarci con le istituzioni, saranno maggiori le chance di vincere questa battaglia epocale.
Il Rotary di ciascun territorio può̀ e deve darsi anche questo impegno.
Una grande opportunità per condividere azioni dirette alla sostenibilità dell’ambiente e al rispetto del nostro pianeta, a partire proprio dalla nostra Malta e dalla nostra Sicilia.

The issue of October month concerns the”Economic and Community Development”.
In these first three months, during my numerous administrative visits to your Clubs I got to appreciate some projects that clubs of District 2110, attentive and sensitive to this topic, are carrying on in the Global Grant area.
I am certain that these worthy initiatives will be able to orient other Rotarians and other clubs.
I believe, as I repeated so many times, expecially during Institutional meetings, that the tangible example, which goes through our services and lives thanks to them, may advise and guide our daily actions and ways of doing and being, better than any word.
My approval, my sincere complacency and my future support, goes to these clubs, their Presidents, Board of Directors, to all members.
As District 2110, we are looking, with special attention, at sustainable and environment issue.
As you probably know, I pretended that these issues wererelated to development, tourism and infrastructures as a driving force for territorial growth, in an inseparable and sometimes symbiotic relationship.
These issues won a consistent part of the Organization Chart of our District: this is an epochal challenge and our Rotary, our District cannot be left back and indifferent.
In fact If we look at the planet, we could notice that next to the many countries with advanced economy, competitive in the organization, technology and logistics, there are others, the so called emerging countries, with a backward economic structure.
In these countries, there is no or almost zero perception of the environment and sustainability, or much different from ours.
We are maturing, sometimes with difficulties, a different perception of the environment in our communities, thanks to the attention of young people and in particolar Rotaractians and Interactians.
For the most developed countries, the choice they think about, is if to continue to remain competitive in a so called commercial and financial globalization, aimed at greater wealth, or to move in a more attentive and sensitive direction to the environment, to new generations, to human future.
It is necessary to guarantee and promote freedom, justice, respect and faith, environment, landscape, flora and fauna with International rules to protect eco system, work and structural investments.
These investments, I will not get tired of saying, are necessary more that ever for our Sicily and our Malta, to continue to envisage a centrality in the Mediterranean.
Andthen next to the developed countries, on which we must act promptly, with the strength of our
ideas, we have the developing countries and those countries, where it is impossibile to think about development, as war and famine make even the imagination complex.
We Rotarians, with our values, our ways of doing and being, fit in both realities.
We are certain to be able to build open, attentive and supportive communities, where it is possible to ensure universal values and to build friendship.
Rotary, as we always remember, proclaims and defends its values with particular attention to leadership and ethics to guarantee an economic and community development.
This economic and community development is able to ensure equity and to offer, to each of us, opportunities to compete and succeed.
This is certifiable if we look at our interventions and investments in the developing countries and if we go through the history of Rotarian projects. We also offered significant opportunity of development and, in some cases, important healthcare opportunity.
Doing so, we give rise to important contagion effectswhich develops, for positive imitation, other interventions. It is evident, in this sense, that our Rotary can still make a lot. (and it must make a commitment to do it) in the developing countries.
These are the so many opportunities for which it is necessary a significant commitment of each of us, of each professionalism we have.
It is necessary in Rotarian clubs, as I am doing now, meeting after meeting,to talk about economy of our territor; in fact, considering the levels of professionalism we have,our clubs can make not only proposals and suggestions but also, starting from these, determine investments and correlate infrastructures.
If we have the capacity to interface with Institutions, our chances to win this epochal battle will be more.
Rotary of each territory can and must make also this commitment: A great opportunity to share actions aimed at sustainability of environment and respect of our planet, starting from our Malta and our Sicily
